With a fully audited upgrade, the long-awaited feature bolsters Safe{Core}, Safe’s AA stack. With ERC-4337 support, Safe’s stack is the one-stop place for developers to build with account abstraction.

[Zug, Switzerland] Safe, the smart wallet infrastructure provider formerly known as Gnosis Safe, has today announced the introduction of ERC-4337 compatibility via its plugin system “Safe Modules”, allowing developers to leverage account abstraction building on Safe’s battle-tested smart account infrastructure. This development comes as the project nears $60 billion in digital assets secured.

Account abstraction is mentioned often, as one of the most important upgrades to Ethereum and has been recently featured in Vitalik Buterin’s blog as part of Ethereum’s 3 critical transitions necessary for the global adoption of web3. Safe has been a leader and first mover in account abstraction with over 3.6 Million smart accounts across chains today, including those created by World App, recently launched by Sam Altman’s Worldcoin.

ERC-4337, a key part of account abstraction, simplifies the user experience of self-custody. It functions as a transaction relayer for smart accounts, offering an off-chain transaction pool for organizing transactions before relaying them to the blockchain. ERC-4337 can be used to abstract away complexities for users like paying for gas fees, social recovery, spending limits, and subscriptions. These capabilities have attracted interest in account abstraction from the likes of payments giant Visa.

Safe launched Safe{Core} to provide developers with the tools to build accessible and user-friendly apps with smart account-enabled features. With concern over the security of digital assets at a peak, Safe’s account abstraction infrastructure now offers a fully audited upgrade allowing ERC-4337 support. Supporting a wide array of use cases, the ERC-4337 compatibility is unlocked in a modular fashion to ensure flexibility for developers.

Richard Meissner, Co-Founder and Technical lead at Safe, said: “At Safe, we built an account abstraction stack that enables the best user and developer experience while maintaining the highest standard of security. ERC-4337 is an exciting addition to the Safe Smart Account toolkit and gives developers the flexibility to choose which relayer technologies they want to build with. We want to build the most modular, flexible, and unopinionated stack for account abstraction. ERC-4337, as it matures, will play a key part as a relaying option for developers to build products for millions of users.”

The new ERC-4337 support is available today via the Safe{Core} AA SDK for developers to build on and will be a key part of the upcoming hackathon at ETHGlobal Paris for Safe.
