In a groundbreaking collaboration, Excillum and VCbattery have unveiled an extraordinary inspection demonstrator for EV battery cells. This visionary technology, employing high-speed 3D CT inline inspection, has the potential to reshape defect detection and analysis, enhancing the safety of EV batteries while streamlining production costs.
The unveiling introduces a pioneering system for 3-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) inline quality control, representing a paradigm shift in EV battery cell manufacturing. By leveraging the MetalJet X-ray technology, the demonstrator, based in Stockelsdorf, Germany, aims to showcase and commercialize next-generation inline 3D CT inspection systems tailored specifically for electric vehicles. Unmatched in terms of speed, performance, and cost effectiveness, this demonstrator will firmly establish the potential for achieving high throughput in inline battery inspection.
Guido Erbach, VCbattery's spokesperson, affirms the collaborative effort's audacity, stating, "Together with Excillum, we push the boundaries of what's possible in the field of X-ray inspection." Erbach adds, "This demonstrator proves that a full rotational CT scan of an EV battery cell can be completed in just one second, enabling inspection throughput of tens of thousands of cells per inspection system per day."
Emil Espes of Excillum concurs on the pivotal role of quality control in EV battery cell production. "Our solution not only significantly reduces the cost per scan for EV battery cell manufacturers but also allows them to gather extensive quality control data," Espes explains with enthusiasm. "We are thrilled to showcase this transformative capability to the industry."
With this collaboration, the EV battery sector can anticipate a new era of heightened safety and optimized production processes, thanks to the cutting-edge inspection techniques introduced by Excillum and VCbattery.
