On July 14 (local time), Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) signed an agreement with Boryspil International Airport Corporation in Kyiv, Ukraine for airport expansion construction.
The agreement signing ceremony, which took place at the Intercontinental Hotel in Warsaw, Poland, was attended by Won Hee-ryong, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of South Korea, Park Seon-ho, chairman of the Overseas Construction Association, Yoon Young-joon, president of Hyundai E&C, and Oleksi Dubrewski, president of Boryspil International Airport Corporation.
Boryspil International Airport, situated approximately 29 km southeast of Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine, is the country's largest airport, accounting for 62% of its passenger traffic and 85% of its cargo traffic.
The Boryspil International Airport Corporation is currently engaged in a feasibility study to upgrade the runway and construct a new cargo terminal following the aftermath of the war.
Drawing on its extensive expertise gained from numerous airport construction projects, both domestic and international, such as Incheon International Airport, Singapore Changi Airport, and Chinchero Airport in Peru, Hyundai E&C plans to provide support for the airport expansion initiative. Additionally, the company's experience in leading national reconstruction projects will prove invaluable in this endeavor.
Looking ahead, Hyundai E&C aims to expand its collaboration to encompass high-speed rail and national infrastructure projects, thereby bolstering its foundation for advancing energy infrastructure initiatives.
In line with this commitment, Hyundai E&C has entered into a Korea-US energy partnership with Holtec International, a US nuclear power plant company. Together, they will undertake the construction of small module reactors (SMRs) with a power generation capacity of 300,000 kW, aimed at revitalizing Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
"To facilitate Ukraine's swift recovery after the war, Hyundai E&C is exploring opportunities to contribute across all fields that showcase Korea's reconstruction expertise," said President Yoon Young-joon. "In order to foster Ukraine's development, we will actively cooperate in various ways, not only in transportation infrastructure like airports and railways but also in energy infrastructure. Our goal is to recreate the success of the Han River Miracle."
