Hyundai Motor and Kia Showcase Cutting-Edge Nanotechnologies at "Nanotech Day 2023"
On a momentous day in Seoul, July 20, Hyundai Motor and Kia joined forces to host "Nanotech Day 2023" at the Community House in Myeongdong, Jung-gu. The event was dedicated to unveiling an array of groundbreaking nanotechnologies that are set to lay the foundation for the future of mobility.
Nanotechnology, a realm where materials are manipulated at the scale of one billionth of a meter, or one hundred thousandth of the thickness of a human hair, allows for the synthesis and arrangement of materials with entirely new properties.
Taking inspiration from the concept of "The Butterfly Effect," where minor changes in initial conditions can lead to enormous outcomes, the theme of the event was "The nano effect." This underscored the significance of technology at the material stage in the rapidly evolving mobility industry, where it has the potential to create a competitive edge in finished products.
During the event, Hyundai Motor and Kia introduced six cutting-edge nanomaterial technologies, each with distinct purposes and applications. To offer visitors an immersive experience, the companies set up a dedicated exhibition space.
The showcased nanotechnologies include:
"Self-Healing Polymer Coating": This technology facilitates the spontaneous and semi-permanent healing of damaged areas.
"Oil Encapsulated Polymer Coating": Dramatically reducing wear and tear on parts through nanocapsules.
"Transparent Solar Cell": Capable of being applied to transparent surfaces like windows in cars and buildings, harnessing solar energy efficiently.
"Tandem Solar Cell": An all-in-one mobility solution boasting the world's highest efficiency.
"Pressure Sensitive Material": Identifying the user's vital signs using only pressure, eliminating the need for traditional sensors.
"Transparent Radiant Cooling Film": Drastically reducing temperature rise inside vehicles, providing a comfortable and sustainable driving experience.
The journey of materials research for Hyundai Motor and Kia dates back to the 1970s. In the late 1990s, the companies established a dedicated organization to focus on advanced materials, making substantial investments and undertaking various research projects.
Recognizing that the rapidly changing mobility industry, especially the transition to electrification and carbon neutrality, demands cutting-edge materials technology, the company has been accelerating the development of new materials and eco-friendly technologies.
"At the root of technological innovation is material innovation, which is the foundation and a key link in industrial convergence," said Lee Jong-soo, Vice President of Hyundai Motor and Kia's Advanced Technology Center. "We will continue to proactively develop excellent advanced material technologies according to industry changes and actively apply them to future mobility."
