SK E&S announced on July 23 that it held an opening ceremony for its renewable energy business representative office in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on July 21.

The office will be responsible for operating and managing existing renewable energy facilities in Vietnam and overseeing the promotion of new businesses.

SK E&S has been operating 131 megawatts (MW) of solar power facilities in the southern province of Ninh Thuan since 2020, focusing on Vietnam's fast-growing renewable energy market. In the western province of Tien Giang, the company has also completed and commercially operated offshore wind farms of 50 MW in 2021 and 100 MW this year.

SK E&S plans to promote various renewable energy projects optimized for local demand based on its experience in Vietnam.

Earlier this year, the company established a joint venture with local company GEC to expand its renewable energy business in Vietnam, and is currently operating a 7.4MW rooftop solar project in Tây Ninh province in southeastern Vietnam, as well as a 756MW onshore wind farm near the border with Laos.

SK E&S will secure carbon credits for the greenhouse gases it reduces through the operation of solar and wind power plants. The company is also preparing to launch the "RE100 Solution Project" to supply eco-friendly power to domestic and foreign manufacturing companies in Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Vietnam is considered an optimal location for solar and wind power generation due to its abundant sunshine and even annual winds along its long north-south coast.

The Vietnamese government, which has declared "net-zero by 2050," is actively expanding renewable energy, announcing that it will increase solar and wind power generation from 27% (21 GW) of the country's total power supply in 2021 to 61% (254 GW) by 2045.
