SK Telecom (SKT) announced today that it will host the AI Hackathon "Prompter Day Seoul 2023" in Seoul next month in partnership with OpenAI in the United States.

Hackathon, a combination of hacking and marathon, is a competition in which participants, including planners, developers, and designers, develop thematic services and business models within a set period of time.

SKT and OpenAI said they organized the competition to respond to rapid technological advancements and industry changes by utilizing generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT, and to discover global talent to lead the future AI industry.

All developers and planners interested in generative AI are welcome to participate in the hackathon. The competition will utilize open AI models, including ChatGPT, for development. Participants can apply through the competition's official website. The deadline is September 3.

The theme of the hackathon is "Developing services that can benefit humanity through AI."

"This hackathon will be a place to gather and evaluate ideas for how generative AI based on interest and love for people can work positively in real life," said an SKT representative.

The competition will be judged by James Dyett, OpenAI Strategic Account Manager, Seok-geun Jung, Head of SKT's Global/AITech Business Unit, and Jung-seok Noh, CEO of B-Factory. AI expert Prof. Hye-Yeon Oh of KAIST will also be speaking at the competition. Participants will receive mentoring support from a team of AI experts and can also use the hackathon as a networking opportunity.

The preliminary rounds will be held on September 16-17 (online), followed by the main round on September 23-24. The main event will feature a variety of programs including competitions, presentation and award ceremonies, panel speeches, and networking time.

The total prize fund is 100 million won, with the grand prize winner receiving 40 million won. Winners will be exempted from the first round of screening when applying for SKT Junior Talent jobs.

The two companies will also consider jointly developing and commercializing services for the best ideas discovered in the competition.

"It's a tremendous honor to be able to develop beneficial and safe AI technologies and to see what the future holds for AI in Korea and around the world," said Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI. "Through this Prompter Day, we will see new ideas, challenges, and services."

"Through this global AI hackathon with OpenAI, we look forward to discovering many promising talents who will lead the AI industry in the future," said Yoo Young-sang, President of SKT. "We will strive to revitalize the global AI ecosystem by strengthening our partnership with OpenAI."
