LG Display is participating in "IMID 2023" at BEXCO in Busan for three days starting August 23, showcasing its unique automotive and large OLED technologies.

Organized by the Korea Display Industry Association, IMID is the largest display conference in Korea, with more than 2,000 display professionals attending each year.

At the opening ceremony on August 23, Kim Byung-koo, Executive Vice President and Head of the Auto Business Group at LG Display, delivered a keynote speech on the direction of the automotive display business.

"As cars evolve into 'smartphones on wheels,' in-vehicle displays will play an important role," he said. "The automotive display market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 10% through 2030."

"Automotive OLEDs, which LG Display was the first in the industry to mass-produce in 2019, are being recognized for their value in the premium automotive market," he continued. "Automotive OLEDs are growing rapidly at a CAGR of 28%, while LTPS LCDs are driving the market with a CAGR of 13%."

"We will continue to grow our automotive display business based on three technologies: P(Plastic)-OLED, Advanced Thin OLED (ATO), and LTPS LCD," he added.

P-OLED is a premium lineup that uses flexible plastic as a substrate, making it lightweight and bendable while maintaining excellent image quality. ATO is an affordable new product with a glass substrate, and LTPS LCD is an advantageous product for larger size and higher resolution compared to conventional LCDs.

He also explained the evolution of the core technology "Tandem OLED device," which LG Display developed for the first time in the industry. LG Display's automotive OLEDs feature a tandem OLED device structure with two layers of organic light-emitting layers, which provides higher brightness and longer lifespan than a single layer, as well as greater durability and reliability.

"This year, LG Display is mass-producing the second-generation Tandem OELD, which has improved luminance (screen brightness) and power consumption by more than 30% and 40%, respectively, compared to the first generation, and is currently developing the third-generation Tandem OLED, which has further improved luminance by 20% and power consumption by 20% compared to the second generation," he said.

In addition, the company plans to lead a new leap forward in automotive displays by innovating display form factors such as ultra-large OLEDs and slidable, rollable, and transparent OLEDs.

"After introducing nine premium automotive brands in Europe, North America, and Korea that are currently producing or developing cars with LG Display's automotive OLEDs, the company will achieve a share of more than 50% in the premium automotive display market by 2026 through quality orders based on future technologies," he said.

Meanwhile, LG Display set up a special exhibition area to showcase its automotive P-OLED panels, including the industry's first 18-inch automotive rollable OLED, third-generation OLED TV panels with meta technology, and gaming OLED panels.

The 18-inch automotive rollable OLED panel, which was unveiled for the first time in Korea, realizes a brighter and clearer screen by applying a tandem element structure to the rollable panel. It maintains a smooth screen even after being rolled and unfolded more than 100,000 times, and can operate normally in extreme environments ranging from minus 40 degrees to 85 degrees.

Other highlights included the 15.6-inch Lightfield Display, which enables 3D stereoscopic viewing without special glasses, and the 0.42-inch OLED On Silicon (OLEDoS), which enables more immersive augmented reality with ultra-high resolution (3,500 PPI).
