RoboDK, a prominent Canadian-European firm specializing in robot programming software, is set to transform the landscape of robot programming with the introduction of the TwinTrack Probe. Scheduled for release in September 2023, this cost-effective device simplifies the process of recording intricate paths within RoboDK using a readily available HTC VIVE tracker and a straightforward 3D printed tool.

As industries continue to embrace robotic automation, traditional programming methods are gradually being replaced. The laborious task of manually positioning robots or modeling parts in CAD software is becoming outdated. Instead, users are seeking efficient ways to record robot trajectories, expediting the deployment of robots in production.

With the TwinTrack Probe, this vision becomes a reality. Users can program their robots effortlessly by manually guiding the probe, recording intricate paths with ease, and enabling robots to mimic operator skills.

What sets the TwinTrack Probe apart is its open design and assembly instructions, making it highly customizable to replicate human dexterity. The probe features two buttons for precise control during the teaching process.

The synergy of an off-the-shelf tracker and an open-source 3D printed tool ensures accessibility, making this solution available to businesses aiming to enhance their automation efficiency.

Balancing Precision and Cost

Traditional industrial-grade measurement systems excel in precision but come with a hefty price tag. Achieving accuracy up to 0.1 mm necessitates specialized knowledge and support from specific vendors.

Olivier Allard, Software Developer at RoboDK, explains, "Teaching robots through conventional demonstration methods often requires costly metrology systems, dedicated support, and extensive training. The price of such hardware can exceed a hundred thousand dollars, surpassing the cost of a robot itself. We aimed to provide a cost-effective solution for applications where precision is not paramount, ensuring accessibility for all."

The TwinTrack probe can be assembled for less than 2000 EUR, encompassing the necessary measurement hardware from HTC and Valve. RoboDK intends to bring the benefits of affordable off-the-shelf measurement technology to its customers, fostering customization for diverse manufacturing applications without the burden of high costs.

Unlocking the Power of Public Design and Off-the-Shelf Trackers

RoboDK specializes in creating solutions that eliminate the need for expensive, vendor-specific hardware. Its programming software already supports an extensive range of robot models from over 70 brands, and this portfolio continues to expand.

The TwinTrack Probe harnesses cutting-edge technology developed for Virtual Reality systems, incorporating HTC Vive Trackers and Valve's Index Base stations. The probe can be crafted using any 3D printer, and RoboDK has shared its design with the public.

Albert, CEO of RoboDK, states, "We are unveiling the design of our TwinTrack Probe to the public. This probe is tailored for applications where precision is secondary. Assembly instructions and 3D models are available on GrabCAD and Thingiverse, and the probe utilizes the same measurement technology found in commercial VR systems, including one HTC Vive Tracker and two or more Valve base stations."

The solution seamlessly integrates with RoboDK software, allowing users to immediately simulate and program recorded paths. Once configured, users can witness the simulated probe's real-time movement within their RoboDK station.

Diverse Applications and Streamlined Programming Workflow

The TwinTrack Probe offers an accuracy of 5mm, suitable for a myriad of robotic tasks. Applications such as painting, dispensing, and pick-and-place benefit greatly from this tool. By programming trajectories in the actual environment, users can compensate for accuracy variations between simulations and real-world objects.

Allard remarks, "This system enables you to create intricate paths on custom-made pieces without relying on CAD software. It's particularly valuable for tasks like painting or dispensing. Additionally, it facilitates rapid development of pick-and-place applications and the creation of part reference frames tailored to real-world part positions."

As robots become more accessible and affordable, the programming phase can become a bottleneck. RoboDK's programming software simplifies robot programming, and the TwinTrack Probe takes it a step further by enabling users to program robots by physically guiding the probe within the workspace.

Users can precisely capture points or curves within the robot's workspace by simply touching them with the probe. Each probe contact generates a target within the RoboDK software, ready for integration into users' programming projects.

Complex curves and trajectories are now more straightforward to program than ever. Users can set their desired target density, move the probe through the air or along the object's surface, and teach robots remotely without the need for a physical robot or computer.

Future plans

With the release of the TwinTrack Probe's design, RoboDK anticipates a wave of innovative applications and success stories from its engaged user base. The company is committed to enhancing user adoption by creating comprehensive step-by-step setup guides for users interested in constructing their own probes.

These initiatives exemplify RoboDK's dedication to empowering users with valuable resources, fostering innovation, and encouraging the exchange of knowledge in the field of robotics.
