SK hynix announced on September 14 that it has co-published a white paper with Intel that demonstrates the highest level of performance of its DDR5 server RAM in Intel's CPUs. The white paper was released simultaneously on SK hynix and Intel's websites.

The two companies have been working closely together since the DDR5 development stage, and the white paper includes the results of performance verification conducted over the past eight months with DDR5 in Intel's 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processor (4th Gen Xeon).

With the server industry's recent demand for low-power, high-performance semiconductors, the two companies will usher in a new era of data centers with memory and CPUs that deliver the highest levels of performance and energy efficiency.

According to the white paper, Intel's 4th Gen Xeon is 2.9 times more performance efficient than the 3rd Gen, and SK hynix's DDR5 uses 14.4% less power than DDR4. In particular, in servers equipped with Xeon, DDR5 has a power-to-performance ratio of 1.22 times higher for integer calculations and 1.11 times higher for floating point calculations compared to DDR4.

As a result, server companies will benefit from improved energy efficiency and sustainability by building data centers with Xeon and DDR5, the companies said. It will also improve the cost-effectiveness of data center operations, helping customers save on total cost of ownership (TCO).

"As demonstrated in the white paper, servers with Intel CPUs and our DDR5 enable faster data processing speeds with less power than previous generations, enabling customers to dramatically increase data center performance," said Sung-Soo Ryu, Vice President (DRAM Product Planning) at SK hynix. "This is especially true when it comes to efficiently utilizing the high-capacity DRAM required to process massive amounts of data, such as in generative AI."

"Intel is working closely with the memory industry, including SK Hynix, to maximize the performance of DDR5 memory in 4th Gen Xeon processors," said Dimitrios Ziakas, vice president of Memory I/O Technology at Intel. "These efforts will enable Intel processors to provide customers with high-performance data center system solutions that are highly energy efficient."

Meanwhile, SK hynix is working with Intel to accelerate its penetration of the server market with certified products. The company plans to strengthen its market leadership by focusing on fourth-generation (1a) and fifth-generation (1b) DDR5 products and accelerate its performance to meet the expected increase in server DRAM demand in the second half of this year.
