LG Uplus and LG Electronics announced on October 18 that they are accelerating their technological leadership by exchanging core technologies and discussing the direction of 6G, the foundation technology for future businesses such as autonomous driving, mobility, and smart factories, with 6G experts.
On October 17, the two companies held the "6G Tech Festa" at LG Science Park, inviting experts from industry, academia, and research, as well as R&D partners. The event was attended by a number of experts, including policy officials from the Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea, the director of the LG-KAIST 6G Research Center, and KAIST Professor Hong Seong-chul.
At the event, LG Electronics exhibited various 6G core technologies, including a terahertz (THz) transmission and reception module that successfully transmitted 500 meters outdoors in urban areas, full duplex communication (Full Duplex), a technology for simultaneous transmission and reception of data in both directions using a single resource, and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, which flexibly utilizes frequency channels according to signal interference conditions.
The company also introduced communication-based solutions such as "Soft V2X," a vehicle to everything (V2X) based traffic safety solution for autonomous driving, and "specialized network virtualization solution" for smart factories.
LG Uplus introduced the powerless Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS), an open wireless access network.
The company also introduced a number of next-generation network-based technologies, including a quality measurement solution for urban air traffic (UAM) airspace networks and the status of research and development on satellite network optimization using quantum computers.
LG Uplus and LG Electronics expect that such exchanges, which build a wide-ranging R&D ecosystem and discuss direction from the stage of original technology development, will lead to the competitiveness of future businesses that will be showcased as the 6G era begins in earnest.
Meanwhile, LG Electronics is building a cooperation belt with domestic and foreign universities and research institutes to secure 6G original technologies, starting with the establishment of Korea's first 6G industry-academia research center "LG Electronics-KAIST 6G Research Center" in 2019. LG U+ is also conducting extensive research and development to secure the original technology for 6G commercialization.
