Hyundai Elevator has won the main prize at the 2023 Japan Good Design Awards, one of the four major international design awards.
Launched in November 2022, the Air Purifier PI-DD combines air sterilization and purification functions in the floor indicator inside the elevator.
The design allows passengers and managers to recognize the operating status naturally, without the need for a separate display. The air inlet and outlet are located at the top, and a magnetic cover is applied to facilitate maintenance.
"COVID-19 has raised awareness of the need for air purification and sterilization in elevators used by an unspecified number of people," said Hyundai Elevator Design Lab Manager Haknam Yoon, who designed PI-DD. "Previously, the method of installing a separate sterilizer has been used, but PI-DD incorporates it into the floor indicator to improve space efficiency and aesthetics."
"Air purifiers and sterilizers are in high demand, but the existing attachable products are detrimental to the elevator interior design," said the judges. "PI-DD was recognized for its ease of management without compromising the overall design."
The Japan's Good Design Awards is a competition that comprehensively evaluates design, usability, and innovation in a variety of areas, from general consumer products to systems, services, and architecture. With this award, Hyundai Elevator has won all four awards in the world.
