NASHUA, N.H., -
Parallel Wireless, Inc., a U.S.-based wireless network technology provider and Open RAN leader, which offers comprehensive wireless network solutions across all generations (2G, 3G, 4G and 5G), including cloud-based Open RAN technologies, announced that it will deploy 2G and 4G networks for a major national operator.
Parallel Wireless has been awarded several projects to build sites across rural Africa to support 2G and 4G connectivity. This includes sites ready for Parallel Wireless 5G software upgrades. The tender includes the full supply and deployment of end-to-end network solutions, including tower, power, transmission and radio access network (RAN). It will focus on rural and suburban areas, deploying and delivering cellular connectivity through the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF) in East Africa, a government initiative to provide greater coverage to all residents.
"As a field-proven preferred technology partner for cellular networks, we look forward to connecting people across East Africa with cellular coverage in Africa's rural and suburban markets," said Yisrael Nov, EVP of Sales at Parallel Wireless. "The deployment of 2G and 4G networks will enable operators to provide efficient technology in low population density areas."
In East Africa, part of sub-Saharan Africa, 2G connections still account for about half of total mobile subscriptions, while 4G adoption has accelerated and now stands at 20%. According to the GSMA, 4G adoption in sub-Saharan Africa will more than double in the next five years, driven by growing demand for faster speeds.
In East Africa, however, more than 50% of the population lives in economically marginal rural areas. Providing rural coverage and adequate telecommunications infrastructure is critical as more and more people rely on voice and data to communicate in their daily lives. In these regions, the ability to communicate and conduct business on mobile devices is essential to sustaining economic activity.
US-based Parallel Wireless’s ALL G (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G) Open RAN software platform has been deployed with global Mobile Network Operators from across six continents and forms an open, secure, and intelligent RAN architecture to deliver wireless connectivity.
