BAE Systems, a longstanding strategic supplier to the UK Ministry of Defence, has awarded Hanwha Aerospace a contract valued at approximately $130 million.
This contract solidifies Hanwha Aerospace's commitment to strengthening defense ties between Korea and the UK. The scope of the agreement involves the supply of 155mm artillery bi-modular charge systems, crucial components for artillery operations.
“This contract with BAE Systems underscores Hanwha Aerospace’s commitment to strengthening Korea-UK defense ties," said Jae-il Son, the President and CEO of Hanwha Aerospace, emphasized the significance of the contract. He highlighted the efficacy of their 155mm Artillery Modular Charge System in meeting NATO's ammunition needs, leveraging Hanwha's robust production capabilities and BAE Systems’ expertise to enhance operational efficiency.
“Our order for the supply of modular charge systems demonstrates the compatibility of the Hanwha Aerospace MCS system with our 155mm ammunition,” said Glynn Plant, Managing Director of Land UK at BAE Systems.
The MCS's design allows for clean burning upon ignition, leaving minimal residue and eliminating the need for barrel swabbing between fires. This characteristic contributes to an increased rate of fire for the system.
The Hanwha Aerospace Bi-Modular Charge System, consisting of HW70 and HW50, was developed in accordance with NATO standards for 39/52 caliber 155mm guns. The systems use BAE Systems’ NATO standard ammunition, L15, meeting the Joint Ballistic Memorandum of Understanding (JBMoU). The performance, safety, and compatibility of these systems have been thoroughly verified.
Noteworthy enhancements in the Bi-Modular Charge System include increased robustness of the Combustible Cartridge Case (CCC) to maximize operability with Automated Turrets, expected to be more widely deployed in the future. Additionally, an improved ignition system ensures fast and uniform propellant ignition, contributing to the overall performance of the artillery systems.
