Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), the largest electric power company in South Korea, announced today its role as an Associate Pathway Partner of the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).

Taking place from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the conference will bring together world leaders, businesses, stakeholders and others to find practical solutions for a sustainable future.

With the growing recognition that nuclear power is a clean energy source and a key solution to decarbonization, KHNP will be at COP28 to showcase its groundbreaking net-zero solutions that make the most of the benefits of nuclear power in driving the global energy transition.

On December 2, KHNP will host a launch session at the Korean Pavilion in the COP28 Blue Zone, where President Whang Ju-ho  will present its innovative SMR (i-SMR) technology and SMR Smart Net-Zero City (SSNC) model.

He will then moderate a panel discussion on "The Role of Nuclear Power in Accelerating a Carbon-Free Future" to discuss how nuclear power can play a critical role in decarbonization and enhancing energy security.

Moderated by Kang Hyun-Kook, Professor of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), the discussion will include KHNP President Whang Ju-ho, Diane Cameron, Director of the Office of Nuclear Technology Development and Economics at the U.S. Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), Chung Beom-Jin, Professor of Nuclear Engineering at Kyung Hee University and President of the Korean Nuclear Society, and Frank Jannuzi, CEO of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation (MMMF).

KHNP will also host a booth in the Green Zone during COP28 to showcase the company's carbon neutralization efforts, including i-SMR and SSNC.

"As a leading company in Korea's energy sector, KHNP is at the forefront of the global journey towards carbon neutrality," said Whang Ju-ho, President of KHNP. "Through innovative carbon-free energy solutions and increased collaboration with global partners in the private and public sectors, we aim to create a greener future for all."

Meanwhile, the COP is a meeting of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to discuss how to implement the agreement. The COP has been held annually since 1995 in Berlin, Germany, and has led to the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 in Kyoto, Japan, which set specific targets for reducing greenhouse gases, and the Paris Agreement in 2015 at the COP21 in Paris, France, which committed to limiting the global average temperature increase to well below 1.5℃.
