Samsung C&T Corp. (Samsung C&T) is joining hands with multinational companies to participate in the largest green ammonia project in Oman.

Samsung C&T announced on December 13 that it has formed a consortium with global companies including Japan's Marubeni, Oman's state-owned energy company OQ, and the UAE's Dutco to secure the concession for the "Salalah H2 Green Ammonia Project," a 1 million tons per year green ammonia production project in Oman.

The Samsung C&T consortium signed a land use agreement with Hydrom for the development of the Salalah green ammonia project in Muscat, Oman, on December 12 (local time).

Oman, which aims to become the world's largest green hydrogen hub, has selected three green hydrogen zones in the south-central region of the country that are suitable for green energy production, and is selecting green hydrogen and ammonia operators for the second phase in the Salalah region after selecting a business developer for the first phase in Duqm in the first half of this year.

The Salalah Green Ammonia Project, for which the Samsung C&T consortium has secured the concession, is a project to produce 1 million tons of green ammonia per year in the Salalah Free Trade Zone, a port city in southern Oman. It will build a large-scale renewable power generation complex including solar and wind power, and utilize OQ's ammonia plant to produce green ammonia.

Starting with this agreement, the project is planned to break ground in 2027 through preliminary research and basic design and start production in 2030, and the green ammonia produced will be exported to global markets such as Korea and Japan and utilized for carbon-free and clean energy power generation.

"Participating in this world-scale green ammonia project with a global partner that has a strong presence in the global energy sector will strengthen Samsung C&T's position as a global leader in sustainable energy solutions," said Lee Byung-soo, head of the Energy Solutions Division at Samsung C&T.

Samsung C&T has set green hydrogen and ammonia as the centerpiece of its green energy business and is promoting green hydrogen and ammonia production projects in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, and in global markets such as Australia.

In Korea, Samsung C&T is participating in a project to build a hub terminal to store and supply green hydrogen and ammonia, and is also building the country's first green hydrogen production facility linked to solar power generation. Samsung C&T is rapidly acquiring global capabilities across the green hydrogen value chain, including recently obtaining international certification for the design of the world's largest liquefied hydrogen tank.
