DL E&C announced on December 20 that the recently completed Canakkale Bridge in Turkuye has been awarded the top prize in the Global Best Projects competition by the US-based Engineering News Record (ENR), a leading construction publication.
ENR annually recognizes the most successful construction projects in each category. This year, 31 projects from 23 countries were selected from more than 100 entries. The Chanakale Bridge beat out all competing projects in the Bridges and Tunnels category to win the Global Best Project award.
The bridge was built by DL E&C and SK ecoplant in March 2018 and took 48 months to complete. With a total length of 3,563 meters, it connects the European and Asian continents and is the longest suspension bridge in the world with a main span of 2023 meters, the distance between the main towers.
During construction, DL E&C and SK ecoPlant installed the world's tallest main tower (334 meters), surpassing the Eiffel Tower in France (320 meters) and Tokyo Tower in Japan (333 meters), and showcased K-E&C's technological prowess through various advanced construction methods, from the world's best ultra-high-strength cables to the largest anchorages and caissons, as well as the use of specially designed airplane wing-shaped tops.
Last year, the Chanakale Bridge won the European Steel Bridge Award from the European Steel Association (EUROFER) and the grand prize for the Civil Structure of the Year Competition from the Korean Society of Civil Engineers.
"By successfully leading large-scale overseas projects such as the Chanakale Bridge, K-Construction's technology is widely recognized around the world," said an official from DL E&C. "We will continue to push the envelope through technological leadership in the industry and expand projects that attract the world's attention."
