SK On is showcasing its electric vehicle (EV) battery technologies for the second consecutive year at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, from January 9-12.
One of the highlights of SK's presence at CES is an interactive amusement park named “SK Wonderland,” where the company, along with its member companies, presents its cutting-edge battery technologies.
A key attraction within this exhibit is the 'Dancing Car,' featuring a fully electric car attached to robot arms that demonstrates the transformation of an automobile into a high-performance EV in a captivating five-minute video. This dynamic display aims to provide visitors with a better understanding of how batteries are integrated into EVs.
At the core of SK On’s technological prowess is the NCM9+ battery, a high-performance high-nickel battery that continues to set global records. This flagship product previously won Innovation Awards at CES 2022 and 2023.
The NCM9+ battery incorporates SK On’s Z-folding technique, a safety-enhancing method that evenly stacks anodes and cathodes between separators in a zigzag manner. The third-generation Z-folding technique has significantly improved productivity, boasting a 2.3 times increase over the first generation.
In addition to the NCM9+, SK On's booth offers visitors the chance to explore various technologies, including the Z-folding technique, S-Pack, and high-speed charging technology. The S-Pack, highlighted in the Dancing Car exhibit, employs Cell-to-Pack (CTP) technology, aiming to minimize the number of modules required in battery packs.
SK On's ultimate goal is to eliminate modules altogether, connecting cells directly to the pack. This innovation not only increases the battery pack's driving range but also reduces manufacturing costs. Noteworthy is the S-Pack’s high safety features, preventing the spread of heat in the event of a fire.
The Dancing Car also serves as a showcase for SK On’s high-speed charging technology, achieving an impressive 80% recharge in just 18 minutes, thanks to special coating technology. This demonstration underscores the company’s commitment to advancing EV technology and infrastructure.
In terms of market presence, SNE Research reported that SK On's EV batteries ranked fifth globally in the January-October period of the previous year. With ongoing growth and innovation, SK On secured the top position in Fortune’s “Change the World” list, marking a significant achievement.
Furthermore, the company received recognition at CES 2023, winning the Best of Innovation in the “Embedded Technologies” category and earning Honoree status in the “Vehicle Tech & Advanced Mobility” categories at the Innovation Awards.
