Samsung C&T has completed construction of the world's second-tallest building, the Merdeka 118 Tower (KL 118) in Malaysia.
The company has completed the second tallest building in the world after the Burj Khalifa (Dubai, United Arab Emirates), solidifying its position as the world's top builder in the high-rise sector.
On January 10 (local time), Samsung C&T announced the completion of the 679-meter tall KL 118, located in the heart of the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, and held a grand opening ceremony.
KL 118 is a 679-meter-high skyscraper with 118 floors above ground (5 floors below). With a gross floor area of 673,862 square meters, it will house offices, a luxury hotel, and a shopping mall. On the top floor of the building, an observation deck will provide a bird's eye view of the city center.
KL 118 features an innovative design and advanced construction technologies, including a 160-meter spire and high-pressure rolling technology. Samsung C&T installed the spire 500 meters above the ground using a lift-up method that uses a hydraulic jack to lift the spire without a tower crane.
In addition, the company successfully completed the construction with a number of high-rise technologies, including high-pressure conveying technology to raise high-strength concrete to the height of the tower, and real-time measurement using GPS.
Samsung C&T has solidified its position in the Malaysian market with a number of high-rise landmark projects, including the Petronas Twin Towers, which was the tallest building in Malaysia at 452 meters when it was completed in 1998, as well as Star Residences, a luxury residential complex, and the Sapura Building, the new headquarters of the Sapura Group.
