Samsung Electronics announced today that it has released the SSD 990 EVO, the latest addition to its consumer SSD lineup. This NVMe SSD boasts powerful performance coupled with improved energy efficiency, making it an ideal solution for a wide range of users engaged in activities such as gaming, work, and video/photo editing.

Compared to its predecessor, the 970 EVO Plus, the 990 EVO offers enhanced performance with a notable 43% improvement. Its sequential read speeds reach up to 5,000 megabytes-per-second (MB/s), and write speeds go up to 4,200 MB/s. The SSD also sees boosts in random read and write speeds, achieving up to 700K input/output operations per second (IOPS) and 800K IOPS, respectively.
Utilizing Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology to directly link to the host processor’s DRAM, the 990 EVO achieves optimized performance, even with a DRAM-less design. This ensures faster loading speeds for games and quick access to large files, providing a notable upgrade for users migrating from previous mainstream SSDs.
One of the key highlights of the Samsung 990 EVO is its improved power efficiency, boasting up to a 70% increase compared to the 970 EVO Plus. This improvement allows users extended usage on PCs without constant concerns about battery life. The SSD also supports Modern Standby, offering an instant on/off function with uninterrupted internet connectivity and seamless notification reception, even in low-power states.
Addressing thermal concerns, the 990 EVO features a heat spreader label that effectively regulates the thermal condition of the NAND chip. This ensures that operations consistently run at their highest levels without compromising drive integrity.
Designed to meet current computing needs and anticipating future requirements, the 990 EVO is a versatile SSD that supports seamless multitasking. It caters to the demands of everyday activities such as gaming, business, and creative workflows.
