LG Display has achieved a significant milestone as its automotive OLED displays became the first to receive the 'Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)' certification for automotive OLED displays from TÜ V Rheinland.
TÜV Rheinland is a renowned global independent testing, inspection, and certification body. The certification was granted to two models, the Auto Display Module – Base Model, for their compliance with the International Standard for Carbon Emission Measurement (ISO 14067:2018). It involved a critical evaluation of carbon emissions throughout the entire lifecycle, from design to production and disposal.
LG Display's achievement is attributed to the incorporation of its independently developed 'Light Control Film Integration Technology.' This technology enhances visibility by controlling the direction of light within the panel, leading to a significant reduction in carbon emissions – up to 18% when compared to previous standards. The benefits extend to production simplification, reduced weight, and improved energy efficiency compared to conventional panels using external films.
The Light Control Film Integration Technology by LG Display is not limited to a single product; it is applied to various automotive display products, including P-OLED and Advanced Thin OLED (ATO). P-OLED utilizes a flexible plastic substrate, resulting in a slim, lightweight, and flexible panel that consumes 60% less power and is 80% lighter than most LCD displays. ATO, on the other hand, aims to expand the automotive OLED market by offering a competitive price point, replacing P-OLED's plastic substrate with a glass substrate.
LG Display's automotive displays feature the pioneering Tandem OLED technology, a groundbreaking two-stack OLED technology that includes an additional organic emitting layer. This technology enhances brightness, stability, and lifespan compared to single-layer OLEDs. The company's second-generation Tandem OLED, in production since last year, boasts higher brightness, enhanced durability, and a 40% reduction in power consumption.
Aligning with the global trend towards eco-friendly automotive components, LG Display is actively developing automotive display technologies and products that minimize their environmental impact. This commitment is further emphasized by the company's previous achievement of the Eco-Product Certification Mark from SGS for its automotive OLED and LTPS LCD displays. This certification acknowledges LG Display's efforts in minimizing the use of hazardous substances and achieving greater energy efficiency.
“By making our differentiated technologies, such as Tandem OLED and SPM (Switchable Privacy Mode), more environmentally friendly, we are further cementing our position as the global leader of automotive displays,” said Keuk-sang Kwon, Vice President and Head of Auto Product Development Division at LG Display.
