HMM held a christening ceremony for the 13,000 TEU container ship HMM Garnet on January 24.

HMM Garnet, built to strengthen its eco-competitiveness and diversify its fleet, is the first of 12 13,000 TEU containerships to be delivered under a contract with HD HHI (six) and Hanwha Ocean (six) in June 2021.

The new HMM Garnet is 335 meters long, much taller than the Seoul Tower in Namsan (about 240 meters) and Yeouido 63 Building (about 250 meters) when erected vertically. In addition, as a vessel specialized in low-speed operation, it reduces pollutant emissions compared to existing ships of the same class and enables economical operation by increasing fuel efficiency, and adopts an LNG Ready format that can be converted to an LNG-powered ship in the future to reduce carbon.

In particular, smart ship technology has been applied to monitor the ship's status in real time in the ship's control room, such as the 20 ultra-large container ships (12 of 24,000 TEU class and 8 of 16,000 TEU class) that have been put into service sequentially since 2020, and communication capabilities have been greatly enhanced to make extensive use of satellite and land communication networks.

In addition, a mobile environment has been established to check the ship's status in real time from anywhere on the ship, and security features have been further enhanced to ensure a stable communication environment.

HMM Garnet will be deployed on the East Coast1 route between the United States and China, which is co-operated by THE Alliance members.

Starting in Kaohsiung on February 3, the ship will call at Xiamen (China) - Yantian (China) - Shanghai (China) - Ningbo (China) - Busan (South Korea) - Yantian (China) - New York (US) - Norfolk (US) - Charleston (US) - Savannah (US) - Singapore.

Starting with this vessel, HMM will take delivery of a total of 12 containerships from HD HHI and Hanwha Ocean by the end of this year.

Once all deliveries are completed, HMM's total fleet will reach 1 million TEUs. In particular, ultra-large vessels of 10,000 TEU and above will account for 80% of the total fleet, further enhancing cost competitiveness and efficiency.
