Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Aerospace presented their state-of-the-art defense technologies to Dr. David Perry, President of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute (CGAI), who visited Hanwha facilities from January 23-24.

Hanwha's endeavors to expand into the Canadian market were underscored by Dr. Perry's visit, which coincided with the company's strategic initiatives.

The visit comprised an extensive tour of Hanwha Ocean's R&D campus and shipyard, as well as Hanwha Aerospace's manufacturing plants. Dr. Perry had the opportunity to witness firsthand the impressive maritime capabilities showcased, including the KSS-III Submarine, alongside various artillery systems such as the K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer and Chunmoo Multiple Launch Rocket System (MRLS). These platforms offer timely and cost-effective solutions tailored to meet the operational needs of the Canadian Army and Navy, thereby facilitating their modernization efforts.

“Our KSS-III Submarines, operating primarily in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, are the optimal choice for Canada.” said Sung Kyun Jeong, Head of Hanwha Ocean's Naval Ship International Business. “As the sole company in Korea constructing submarines equipped with the latest lithium-ion batteries, and Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, Hanwha Ocean is committed to playing a vital role in strengthening the robust strategic partnership between Korea and Canada.”

“An impressive track record provides Hanwha with a favorable position for potential success in Canada, further establishing the K-9 as a Western standard self-propelled howitzer," said John Kelly, CEO and President of Hanwha Defense USA. "As Canada seeks to grow its presence in NATO European deployments, Hanwha stands ready to provide artillery solutions based on the K9 self-propelled howitzer, that are already in service with many NATO allies."

Canada's aspirations to bolster its role within NATO align with Hanwha's capabilities in land systems and maritime technologies, offering immediate benefits to the Canadian Armed Forces. The K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer, renowned for its firepower, mobility, and survivability, has already garnered success across multiple countries, making it a promising solution for Canada's defense needs.

Furthermore, Hanwha Ocean's readiness to supply the KSS-III Submarine for the Canadian Surface Combatant Program (CSP) underscores its commitment to meeting Canada's specific requirements. The innovative propulsion system of the KSS-III, coupled with its proven performance with the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN), positions it as a reliable and credible choice for Canada's naval modernization efforts.

The visit of Dr. Perry comes against the backdrop of the 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' announced between Korea and Canada in 2022, aimed at enhancing security cooperation as part of Canada's Indo-Pacific strategy. The increasing defense cooperation between both nations, as evidenced by joint naval drills and port calls, reflects a deepening commitment to fostering mutual security interests and strengthening bilateral ties.
