Hanwha Ocean has succeeded in developing an eco-friendly economic shipping solution that enables shipowners to respond more efficiently to environmental regulations.
Hanwha Ocean has developed a ship Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) monitoring smart ship technology that measures carbon dioxide emissions during ship operations to provide shipowners with an eco-friendly operating solution. The technology will be applied to a series of ultra-large ammonia carriers recently ordered by Hanwha Ocean.
The CII is an index of the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by a ship using operational information such as fuel usage and distance traveled. It is an eco-friendly regulation that the International Maritime Organization has been implementing since last year.
Under this regulation, the International Maritime Organization assigns a grade from A to E to ships based on the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by ships of 5,000 tons or more each year. If a ship receives an E grade or a D grade for three consecutive years, it is restricted from operating until an improvement plan is developed and recertified.
By linking the monitoring technology with HS4, Hanwha Ocean's own smart ship platform, Hanwha Ocean is able to automatically calculate the CII of the vessels currently in operation. In particular, it can predict the current rating of the vessel, as well as the rating of the voyages it is operating, and the rating at the end of the year.
It also provides a range of optimal sailing options, such as speeds and routes that emit less carbon dioxide. This eco-friendly economic operation solution is expected to increase shipowners' satisfaction by linking HS4 with various Energy Saving Devices (ESD) such as rotorsails that save fuel by using wind power.
"We are continuously developing technologies that can effectively respond to increasingly stringent environmental regulations," said an official from Hanwha Ocean. "Through this, we plan to further satisfy shipowners with Hanwha Ocean's unrivaled eco-friendly technologies."
Meanwhile, Hanwha Ocean is applying various eco-friendly technologies such as Air Lubrication System (ALS) and Shaft Generator Motor (SGM) to shipbuilding to help shipowners operate economically and respond to eco-friendly regulations.
