HMM announced today that it has earned a Leadership (A-) rating for climate change action from CDP, a global sustainability rating agency.
Founded in the United Kingdom, the CDP is a global ESG initiative led by more than 700 financial investment institutions worldwide, with more than 23,000 companies participating. The CDP is one of the most trusted ESG assessments in the world, and its results are used by other ESG rating agencies such as EcoVadis and S&P.
HMM participated in the CDP for the first time in 2010, and after achieving a B- in 2014, we have strengthened our environmental management to achieve an A- in the 2023 assessment. This is significantly higher than the maritime transportation sector average of B- and the global average of C.
In particular, HMM received the highest grade of A for its climate change response strategy and financial impact analysis, and A- for establishing greenhouse gas reduction targets and calculating and reporting indirect emissions (Scope 3).
In January, HMM was also recognized as the Best Green Shipping Line at the Green Shipping Summit Awards. The Green Shipping Summit Awards recognize shipping lines, terminals, equipment suppliers, associations and others for their contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through online voting and judging by industry experts.
HMM was recognized for developing a supply chain carbon calculator to estimate the carbon emissions generated during cargo transportation and actively promoting the introduction of alternative fuels such as bio marine oil.
"We are conducting various research and development programs to become carbon neutral, such as introducing eco-friendly ships and demonstrating carbon capture," said an HMM representative. "We are actively responding to global eco-friendly regulations and securing future competitiveness."
