LG Display has recently attained a series of eco-friendly certifications for its OLED TV and Transparent OLED displays, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability by reducing plastic usage and incorporating recycled materials.
UL Solutions, a leading global safety science company, has awarded LG Display's OLED TV and Gaming OLED panels with its 'Low Plastic Content' verification, a groundbreaking achievement in the display panel industry.
This certification, granted to products with less than 5% plastic content by weight, underscores LG Display's dedication to minimizing environmental impact. Internal assessments revealed that LG Display's 65-inch OLED TV panel contains just 4% plastic, a remarkable reduction compared to LCD counterparts of similar size.
OLED technology inherently reduces plastic usage as it eliminates the need for a backlight unit, with each pixel emitting its own light. Additionally, OLED panels require fewer film sheets, further contributing to plastic reduction efforts. LG Display has gone a step further by replacing key OLED panel components with recyclable materials, achieving an impressive 92.7% recycling rate during product disposal. Their third-generation OLED TV panels, featuring advanced 'META Technology 2.0', boast 22% higher energy efficiency than traditional OLEDs of equivalent brightness, resulting in reduced power consumption.
In another milestone, LG Display's Transparent OLED, the sole mass-produced variant globally, has secured the Eco-Product Certification Mark from SGS, a renowned Swiss-based inspection and certification authority. This certification, earned through compliance with rigorous environmental standards throughout the product life cycle, marks a significant step towards defining industry benchmarks for eco-friendly next-generation displays.
The Transparent OLED panel scored highly in resource efficiency, energy efficiency, and minimal use of harmful substances, with up to 23% of its components derived from recycled materials. Additionally, LG Display adheres to the EU's REACH regulations, ensuring the exclusion of over 200 high-risk substances.
Since 2021, LG Display has implemented a comprehensive life cycle evaluation (LCA) technique to assess environmental impacts at every stage of product development. This approach has led to reductions in material usage, greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and waste generation. Looking ahead, LG Display aims to develop energy-saving products and enhance OLED technology processes to further reduce carbon footprint and promote sustainability.
“We are committed to proactively advancing environmental-friendly OLED development in response to ESG trends, while simultaneously actively promoting the technological excellence of LG Display’s OLED panels, which not only offer outstanding picture quality but also demonstrate a focus on environmental,” said Min-kyu Jin, Head of the Large Display Promotion Division at LG Display.
