SK On has unveiled its latest breakthroughs in battery technology, set to dazzle audiences at the forthcoming battery exhibition in Seoul. The company will showcase cutting-edge battery cells featuring advanced fast-charging solutions, alongside a range of products demonstrating its latest R&D achievements.

Among the highlights will be the Advanced SF and SF+ batteries, key exhibits at InterBattery 2024, South Korea’s premier battery trade show scheduled at the Coex Convention & Exhibition Center from March 6 to 8.

The original SF (Super Fast) Battery, launched in 2021, was a game-changer, offering rapid charging from 10 percent to 80 percent in a mere 18 minutes. Building upon this success, the Advanced SF Battery ups the ante, boasting a 9 percent increase in energy density while maintaining the same swift charging time. This enhanced energy density translates to extended driving ranges on a single charge.

SK On achieved this feat through innovative methods, including a specialized coating technique that significantly reduces anode resistance and an optimized fast-charging protocol leveraging analytics solutions for maximum efficiency.

The SF+ Battery, another variant of the SF series, pushes the boundaries even further with a charging time of just 15 minutes. SK On achieved this remarkable speed by reducing the transport distance of lithium ions and enhancing their movement speed through the application of high-capacity silicon with low-resistance graphite on a self-developed dual-layer structure.

Also on display at InterBattery 2024 will be the Winter Pro LFP Battery, highlighting its exceptional performance in low temperatures. Unlike conventional LFP batteries, which can suffer significant reductions in driving range in cold conditions, the Winter Pro LFP Battery extends both charging and discharging capacity by 16 percent and 10 percent, respectively, while increasing energy density by 19 percent.

SK On has structured its exhibition booth into four zones under the theme of “Speed On,” symbolizing the company’s commitment to accelerating its growth trajectory.

Visitors can explore a range of exhibits, including miniature SK On battery-powered vehicles, a spherical LED display showcasing the company's global operations, and demonstrations of innovative technologies such as non-washing methods for cathode active materials processing.

The “Application” zone will feature electric vehicles equipped with SK On batteries, providing insights into their specifications and features. Additionally, SK On’s energy storage system (ESS) will make its public debut, offering a glimpse into the company’s next-generation DC Block technology.

Fire safety innovations will also be highlighted, including a thermal propagation solution that has garnered North American ESS fire safety certification and a liquid cooling method to optimize charging and discharging efficiency while minimizing temperature differentials between cells.

Visitors can also explore SK On’s diverse battery portfolio in the “Battery Portfolio Diversification” zone, featuring products in various form factors and chemistries, including prismatic and all solid-state batteries, each boasting upgraded features to meet evolving market demands.

“Visitors will be able to find out our top-notch R&D capabilities through the exhibitions,” a SK On spokesman said. “SK On will continue developing innovative technologies and diversifying product portfolios to meet various needs of the customers.”
