Coupang has taken a significant stride by extending its "Rocket Jikgu" service to Japan, enabling Korean consumers to purchase Japanese goods conveniently via overseas direct purchase (ODP).
The announcement came on March 11, as Coupang unveiled its latest offering, the "Rocket Jikgu" Japan service. This service, known for its speed and convenience, marks yet another expansion of Coupang's ODP services, following its successful ventures into the U.S. market in 2017, China in 2021, and Hong Kong in 2022. With the introduction of Rocket Jikgu Japan, Coupang reaffirms its commitment to delivering competitive ODP services.
The Korean Statistical Information Service (KOSIS) reports an 11% year-on-year growth in the ODP market for Japanese goods in 2023. Notably, food products experienced a remarkable 45% increase in demand. Despite this surge in demand, Korean consumers faced challenges due to limited options and poor price competitiveness among existing ODP services for Japanese goods in Korea.
Coupang's Rocket Jikgu service aims to address these challenges by offering a wide array of Japanese products, including food items and snacks from renowned brands like Nissin, Meiji, LeTao, and AGF. Additionally, popular household and beauty brands such as Senka, Biore, Fino, Tsubaki, and P&G Japan will be available. The selection further extends to home and kitchen brands like Ishida and Joseph Joseph, along with books and stationery from Zebra, Mitsubishi, and Pentel.
To commemorate the launch, Coupang is rolling out various promotions. From March 11 to 14, customers can enjoy 3,000-won discount coupons on purchases exceeding 45,000 won of Japan Jikgu products and selected U.S. and Chinese items.
Special one-day sales on specific Japan Jikgu products and discounted prices on limited quantities across categories are also part of the celebration. Moreover, popular U.S./China/Hong Kong Jikgu products, featuring dietary supplements, home appliances, and beauty items, will be available at discounted rates. WOW members can enjoy free delivery even on single Rocket Jikgu item orders.
“For consumers who had to go through a cumbersome process to buy goods directly from Japan, we expanded the service scope of Rocket Jikgu,” said a Coupang official. “Going forward, we will continue to make efforts to offer an extensive array of global products, leveraging Coupang’s unique competitiveness in ODP service, such as reasonable prices and fast delivery.”
