According to a survey by the Ministry of Environment, people prefer the volume-based food waste fee system to the monthly flat rate system. A survey on people's awareness of the volume-based food waste fee system showed the fact that 64.3 percent of respondents regards the volume-based food waste fee system more rational than the monthly flat rate system. In particular, the preference rate was higher among those who know the concept of the volume-based food waste fee system and live in areas where the system is implemented. (74.5%).
Reflecting the result of the survey, the ministry plans to make methods to carry out the volume-based system in a more active way and make people know about the wasteful cost of disposal of excessive food waste and the necessity of the volume-based system.
In the 'comprehensive plan for reducing food waste' in 2010, the ministry said it would introduce the volume-based food waste fee system to 144 local governments until 2012. Considering the fact that cost of collection and disposal of food waste was about 800billion won last year, it is expected that more than 160billion won can be cut down when 20percent of food waste is reduced nationally.
