The Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Research Center of Korea (GIR) held a ceremony to commemorate the 1st anniversary of its founding on June 14 with participation by the Minister of Environment, the former chairman of the Presidential Committee on Green Growth and other related research institutes and public institutions.
Under the Framework Act on Low Carbon Green Growth, GIR was established in April 2010 and has conducted diverse activities including management of greenhouse gas statistics, supporting greenhouse gas reduction target by stage and field and cooperation projects with international organizations and developing countries. In an attempt to manage national greenhouse gas statistics in accordance with the international standards, GIR organized the national greenhouse gas statistics committee in February, 2011 and made guidelines for calculation, report and verification of national statistics. In addition, GIR analyzed greenhouse gas reduction models by stage and field to meet the national targets for reduction of greenhouse gas by 2020. With a view to expand the base of domestic experts and enhance their capabilities, GIR held a forum for experts on greenhouse gas reduction policies and published a source book.
GIR will improve connectivity between statistics management and reduction model analysis, upgrade its English website and promote an international forum. Also, it will enhance cooperation with related institutes such as GGGI, ADB and KOICA* and support developing countries including Laos and Cambodia.
