As important ingredients of the government's IT 839 Strategy, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) service and VoIP Service are expected to contribute toward the national target of achieving a $20,000-per capita gross domestic product (GDP). RFID is a sensor technology that perceives information about things as well as their surrounding circumstances by tagging them with electronic tags. Experts forecasts that RFID would find applications to broad fields of life from livestock farming to waste management to environment control, and from logistics/distribution to security. The Ministry of Information and Technology (MIC) plans to formulate a standard for 433MHz technology in 2005 to develop/promote mobile RFID and to complete forms of associated core technology development such as an RFID chip by 2007. A spokesperson for MIC said, "The Ministry will promote various fields such as harbor management, telematics, and home networks by formulating a 433MHz technology standard in the near future". Through the development and promotion of mobile RFID, which combines mobile communications and RFID, MIC intends to create new service fields such as detailed information on the flow, location and pricing of commodities. The Ministry intends to develop or commercialize RDIF tags and middleware in the short term and allow laboratories to concentrate their efforts on developing next-generation core technology such as Ubiquitous network-related sensor nod technology. MIC expects the RDIF market to reach $54 billion by 2010 and enhance production to the value of 7.7 trillion won (including services as well as equipment and devices). In addition, RFID will generate synergy through being grafted onto/connected with new growth industries such as telematics and home networks that will serve to improve the convenience of daily life. Second, MIC plans to develop VoIP as a future BcN-based core service. Because of the diffusion of high-speed Internet access as well as improvements in the quality of Internet services, VoIP-based phone services available at moderate charges have made their appearance. After the MIC has completed the VoIP service system during the first half of 2005, the Ministry plans to launch full-scale services in second half. Experts contend that once services are up and running, Korea will be well placed to take the lead in world VoIP technology as well as in creating the relevant standards, developments that will likely boost production induction by 14.5 trillion won and value-added by 13 trillion won by 2010. VoIP is expected to enhance convenience in the overall communication environment by making available additional forms of service such as screening telephone calls.
