Korea? Hi-Tech Products Attract Russian Consumers

By lee Hyo-sik President Roh Visit to Russia MOSCOW - (Yonhap) Russia biggest exhibition of high-tech products will open here for a five-day run, with major South Korean companies showcasing their latest mobile phones to lure Russian consumers. Billboards, including several advertising Samsung cell phones and flat screen televisions, line a major boulevard in the Russian capital of Moscow, where a technology fair featuring cutting-edge South Korean products kicks off. Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and Curitel Communications will exhibit their newest handsets in the Sviaz Expocomm 2005, which is also expected to draw about 870 exhibitors from 37 countries. Samsung, which has been the leader in the Russian mobile phone market since the third quarter of 2004, plans to showcase about 10 mobile phone models including a seven-megapixel camera phone and a handset capable of showing digital television programs via a satellite. As for other gadgets by Samsung, the world third-largest handset maker will also demonstrate a new mobile phone equipped with a version of high-speed downlink packet access, which will allow faster access to the wireless Internet. Earlier on Monday, Samsung said it aims to raise handset sales in Russia by 16 percent this year, keeping its spot as the biggest cell phone vendor in the market. Samsung targets to sell more than 6.5 million handsets in Russia this year, compared with 5.9 million units last year, the company said in an e-mailed statement. That would account for about 7.5 percent of Samsung total handset sales target of 86 million this year. Samsung Electronics aims to maintain its No. 1 spot in the Russian handset market with cutting-edge technical power and superior design,said Paek Bong-joo, head of Samsung Commonwealth of Independent States operations. LG Electronics plans to attract visitors by showing off its latest range of mobile phones including a 1.3-megapixel handset with wideband code division multiple access technology and a three-megapixel camera phone with fingerprint-recognition capability. Curitel Communications and its parent Pantech Co. will exhibit a total of 37 models, with the aim of selling their own brand handsets in the Russian market.
