MOST: To foster BT as a core national growth engine MIC: To accomplish IT industry production 38 billion won & export $110 billion Science & Information and Communication Technology are coming to the fore as two axes in paving the way for establishing a national strategy for Korea to accomplish its goal of a per capita income of US$20,000 era. In particular, the cooperation of MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology) and MIC (Ministry of Information and Communication) seems to be more important than ever since there are many pending problems such as achieving the goal of 5% economic growth and creating 400,000 jobs to be accomplished through concentrating national capabilities. First off, MOST is striving to foster biotechnology (BT) as a post-IT core next-generation growth engine by intensively strengthening its competitiveness. Also, MIC development strategy to adopt new IT services ahead of competitors, commercialize them and take the lead in the IT service industry has turned out to be successful. Thanks to the two ministries efforts, the Korean IT industry has developed into a global industry by the introduction of new services that create demand, establishment of infrastructure that enables the provision of new services, and enhanced manufacturing capabilities. Through its IT839 strategy, the MIC especially aims to accomplish an IT industry production level of 38 billion won, and exports of $110 billion within the tenure of the Participatory Government. Since tangible results are appearing from upgrading the minister of MOST to the level of Deputy Prime Minister, MOST have become the subject of new attention. For that reason, The Korea IT Times has prepared a series of special articles regarding the goal of MOST and MIC to bring per capita income up to the US$20,000 level.
