APEC 2005 Heralds Both a Diplomatic Festival and an Economic Bonanza.

Prominent overseas business figures head for APEC 2005 CEO Summit The 2005 APEC gathering in Busan, Korea, promises to be not only a diplomatic festival, but also a substantial "economic feast." According to the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI), 780 CEOs from Korea and abroad had applied online to participate in the APEC CEO Summit 2005, as of the beginning of November. They include: Tongyang group, SK group, Hyosung, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, as well as e-Bay, Qualcomm, AIG, Citigroup, DHL, CNOOC and Gale International etc. These entrepreneurs and investors who are expected to number up to 1,000 participants at a moderate estimate, will take part in the APEC CEO Summit to be held at the Lotte Hotel in Busan on Nov. 17~19, as well as in the APEC 2005 Investment Opportunities to be held at the City Hall of Busan Metropolitan Government on Nov. 14~17. The APEC CEO Summit 2005 will explore the theme, "Entrepreneurship and Prosperity: Building a Successful Partnership in the Asia-Pacific Region". Chairman of the APEC CEO Summit 2005, Hyun Jae-hyun, pointed out: "Faced with the current uncertainties that put international society at risk, we are increasingly called upon to devise ever more innovative strategies to cope with unprecedented challenges," adding that entrepreneurship will play a key role in overcoming these challenges and has the potential to lead Korea to greater prosperity. CEOs who catch the eye among visiting overseas personalities, include Mrs. Margaret C. Whitman, president of e-Bay, and Paul E. Jacobs, president of QUALCOMM Wireless & Internet Group. Margaret C. Whitman who is a woman entrepreneur of great caliber selected as the most influential woman entrepreneur by Fortune magazine in 2004, is expected to discuss the company's investment expansion plans within Korea by visiting Auction Korea, Korea's online auction company that e-Bay has acquired plus her participation in the APEC CEO Summit during her visit. Paul E. Jacobs who holds CDMA core technology, is the third son of chairman & CEO Irwin M. Jacobs, founder of Qualcomm and became new CEO of the company, Wireless & Internet group. As far as Korea is the largest customer in conjunction with CDMA, official as well as unofficial meetings with domestic corporations' CEOs and governmental officials are likely to take place. In addition, other CEOs from abroad include William R. Rhodes (vice chairman, Citygroup), Craig Mundie (vice president Microsoft), Donald P. Kanak (AIG, executive vice chairman & COO). From Korea, some of the distinguished business leaders scheduled to take part in the APEC CEO Summit meeting include Kim Shinbae (president, SK Telecom), Chey Taewon (SK group chairman), Cho Yang-ho (chairman, Korean Air) and KT president, Nam Joong-soo etc.
