Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC, CEO Byun Jong-il) on October 30 at 16:00 announced that it held a groundbreaking ceremony at the Jeju Healthcare Town site in Seogwipo City to start construction of Greenland Jeju Healthcare Town. Greenland Korea Investment & Development LLC, founded by Green Group (Chairperson Chang Ok-ryang), hosted the ceremony.

About 300 dignitaries, including Greenland Group chairperson Chang Ok-ryang, Shanghai Standing Committee Vice-minister Wang Shin-pyeong, Jeju Governor Woo Geun-min and Ministry of Land, Transport, Maritime Affairs officials and other government officials attended the ceremony.

Following pre-ceremony events, which included PR video screening and performance shows, an introduction of major figures, welcoming address, and opening remarks with congratulatory messages were delivered. Then, a commemorative blast and a shovel full of earth to start groundbreaking were conducted.

JDC CEO Byun Jong-il in his congratulatory speech expressed sincere appreciation to community members in Jeju province and related government officials for supporting JDC in concluding a formal contract in the shortest period of time in the history of foreign investment, since the signing of a KRW1 trillion investment MOU with Greenland Group in July, to implement the Jeju Healthcare Town (JHT) project. He noted the project now moves to a visible achievement stage with the groundbreaking ceremony.

“I expect that the participation of world-renowned Green Group will contribute to the perfection of the JHT project. Jeju Healthcare Town will help to improve the quality of life of all concerned by setting a new vision for medical tourism, including wellness and recreational tourism,” he said.

As one of JDC’s six core projects to turn Jeju into a free international city, Jeju Healthcare Town is designed to satisfy medical and leisure needs at the same time by combining Korea’s top-quality medical services with Jeju’s natural beauty.

For the successful launch of Jeju Healthcare Town, JDC has taken bold steps to attract investment to the JHT project in close collaboration with the Jeju Special Self-governing Provincial Government and related authorities. On October 18th (Thursday), only three months after inking the MOU to attract an investment of KRW1 trillion for Jeju Healthcare Town, it signed a formal contract with Greenland Group.

Greenland Group now is speeding up its plans, moving up the groundbreaking ceremony date by two months, after originally scheduling it for December this year. On October 11 (Thursday), it founded local investment entity Greenland Jeju. The start of construction is significant, as it is the first among the core projects led by foreign investors.

The development plan includes recreational condominiums in the first phase; Wellness Mall, Well-being Food Zone, and Healing Garden in the second phase; and R&D and anti-aging centers in the third phase. In addition to the signing of the formal contract, successive tasks, including 1st phase land supply contract and start of construction, are accelerating the full-scale implementation of the project.
