The Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MCT) will invest a total of 2.7 trillion won ($2.7 billion), from 2006 to 2010, to support the development of new media contents, including digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) and portable Internet (WiBro). An official of the MCT said that the ministry is mapping out a plan to support three projects of the new media industry _ the new media contents material bank project, construction of media manufacture information system and Korea-type NewsML R&D project. First of all, the ministry will push for the new media contents material bank project, which deposits and manages contents for new media systematically at digital archive, by investing 1.3 billion won for the coming five years. The ministry will also invest 1 billion won for the construction of a media manufacture information system until 2010, which is aimed at creating a base to activate the media industry through offering of industrial information, including manufacture and distribution of the industry. It will invest 300 million won for development of Korea-type NewsML, a global standard of news format, to reduce expenses on contents management, processing and system operation.
