Korea's Information Technology (IT) "Big Bang" would start from 2010 in earnest, KT President Nam Joong-soo said. Delivering a keynote speech at the IAAT Readers' Forum held at JW Marriott Hotel in Seoul on March 21, Nam said, "As ubiquitous infrastructure has been rapidly spreading, I expect IT Big Bang to come in 2010 in earnest." Announcing his paper on "IT Big Bang and the future of IT Korea," he said, "The digital generation of the present do not seek new learning in the digital environment, but they are the class recognizing the environment itself. Accordingly, they are expected to have a purchasing power in earnest from 2010, touching off the IT Big Bang." President Nam said, "Related to this, we should create the market environment that enables sustainable growth, and reform regulatory systems in preparation for convergence between industries, as well as foster global manpower in the IT sector." Commenting that it is also possible for KT with no owner to face disputes over managerial rights like KT&G, he said that KT is preparing a variety of countermeasures. Related to this, Prof. Bae Soonhoon of KAIST said that KT has high competitiveness in terms of labor productivity, but reaches half of the level of AT&T in terms of asset productivity. It means that KT could become a good target of M&A, like KT&G. 'To avoid such possible M&A attempts, KT is now working on a plan to enhance labor productivity by introducing a salary cap system," Nam said. On the delay of the IPTV service, President Nam said, "We can offer the IPTV service immediately after regulatory institutions solve their problem. Major foreign CEOs do not understand why Korea cannot provide the IPTV service." Nam also added that KT is preparing the home network and ucity systems as a means of strengthening its competitiveness in the market.
