KTF HSDPA Automatic roaming service expected in over 60 countries by the end of the year As Korea's mobile communication environment begins its so-called "generation shift" from 2G to 3G, KTF is poised to commercialize its HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) during this month. HSDPA/WCDMA that KTF presents alongside of SK Telecom, is expected to shape the development of new features of higher-dimension mobile communication services, such as global roaming, bi-directional screen telephone, high-speed multimedia content service. Not content with its leadership in the 3D HSDPA/WCDMA market, KTF has concluded an agreement regarding a joint venture as well as fund investment with Japan NTT Tocomo, a prominent global business provider in this field, in December 2005. The company makes no secret of its ambition to dominate the market by all means possible in a more evolved 3D market from now on, based on the fact that KTF has always been No. 2 in the 2G mobile communication market. In regard to HSDPA, CEO Cho Young-joo of KTF said that the company is slated to commercialize the technology this month, since the WCDMA R5 (HSDPA) network construction of 36 major cities nationwide is concurrently under way. With regard to service, Cho explained that KTF is offering screen telephone, screen mailbox as well as additional services where development is under way, based on screen, unique to WCDMA. Besides, KTF is developing large-capacity content, high-quality MMS, and high-definition which utilizes high-speed data transmission capability, HSDPA's specific character, plus developing SVD service which offers voice and data simultaneously, according to Cho. It is said that KTF's preparation for global roaming service is also progressing smoothly. In the case of terminals, KTF is scheduled to launch its terminals this month. Cho added that network-gearing test about 1.8Mbps notch's WCDMA R5 (HSDPA) terminal as well as verification of various terminal functions are currently under way. In connection with marketing, KTF is slated to launch the WCDMA special rate system as well as promotions, etc., in line with the WCDMA R5 (HSDPA) terminal launch this month. In terms of marketing infrastructure as well, business computerization infrastructure development as well as UICC card reader publicity programs are under way, Cho explained. HSDPA's Killer Application includes screen mailbox service, high quality MMS service, high-definition VOD service, high-speed download service. He expects that over 60 nations will be able to receive overseas automatic roaming service much more conveniently than today by the second half of the year.
