u-IT839 and commercialization of WiBro leading to Ubiquitous society Thanks to Korea's active implementation of the IT839 strategy since 2004, the WiBro (wireless broadband) system is a representative case among u-IT839 strategic items that was successfully developed for the first time globally and has been promoted as international standard along with the DMB (digital multimedia broadcasting) transmission and reception system. In that sense, WiBro's activation is expected to raise expectations that the $20,000 national income per head era and Ubiquitous society will become a reality even earlier than anticipated. It will serve as a new growth engine of the future by enhancing the nation's living environment and by creating employment with new investment for stagnated domestic IT industry and associated industry's activation. By means of WiBro service's commercialization, users can come to enjoy abundant and pleasant quality of life by utilizing limited time effectively through advanced technology usage. From the corporate standpoint too, global competitiveness is expected to improve, as corporate productivity is on the rise with Mobile Office materialization and throughout the society, national quality of life is forecast to increase by advancing into the Ubiquitous society earlier. WiBro offers sufficient competitiveness in that users can use diverse established wire Internet contents at a reasonable price. WiBro service activation's requisites include high-speed transmission speed and optimal service quality, contents to be able to satisfy changing customer needs, policy support such as terminal subsidy permission and combination service permission, world market inroads through international standardization activity and digital paradigm change initiative. With WiBro's commercialization service to be offered for the first time globally in June this year, the global diffusion of WiBro is likely to be accelerated further. WiBro's significance lies in the fact that it was developed domestically, unlike CDMA technology, which was introduced from overseas, according to Mr. Hong Won-pyo, executive vice president of the Mobile Internet Business Group, KT. With this, Korea is now in a position to boost the country's profile once again in the IT field by being in the vanguard of the global WiBro market and reducing its burden of paying enormous royalties. Providing WiBro is activated successfully at home this year, the service's overseas inroads will be even greater. On one hand, WiBro's overseas inroads will gain momentum provided that WiBro equipment gets the first mobile WiMAX certification. Since WiBro is a service that enables customers to use high-speed Internet at a reasonable price with a mobility of 100km~120km per hour, WiBro is expected to be able to satisfy customers' need for large-capacity wireless Internet service. In a nutshell, WiBro as a personal broadband service will become the Second Internet Revolution's foundation to pave the way for the wireless TPS era, based on full-scale ALL IP network. Experts agree that Korea is expected to take the initiative in leading the global market of WiBro in addition to contributing greatly to corporate productivity and improving individual's quality of life. In conclusion, WiBro will evolve into 4G-communication service by incorporating 4G's major technology elements such as OFDM, TDD, ALL IP, MIMO technology. Through its mapping out new u-IT839 strategies, Korea's Ministry of Information & Communication (MIC) also helped prepare the best environment for introduction of the new services such as WiBro, DMB, telematics and Internet telephony services, thus providing a new growth momentum for the sluggish telecom market.
