Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) said on December 17 that it has won an order to build two liquefied natural gas tankers for Teekay of Canada.
The vessels will be constructed with the world's first M-type, electronically controlled, gas injection (MEGI) twin engines, which are expected to be much more fuel efficient and have lower emission levels than existing engines used in LNG carriers.
The ships have the dimension of a length of 291.4 meters and a width of 46.4 m, with the tank capacity of 173,000 cubic meters. Scheduled for delivery by 2017, the tankers will be built in DSME's Okpo Shipyard in Geoje Island. The contract includes options to order up to three additional vessels.
A DSME official said, "The LNG tankers we will build are high in fuel efficiency and will lead the market for LNG carriers."
