SEOUL, KOREA - A locally-produced mini electric car with a retail price of about 10 million won will be released by 2014 at the earliest.
On December 17, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy showed off the design of a mini high-speed electric car model at the POSCO Global R&D Center in Songdo in Incheon, Korea.
This is the first time for the two-door light-weight electric car to make public appearance.
To develop the mini electric car, the ministry has supported the research and development of a group of local private companies, including IT Engineering, since July 2012.
The mini high-speed electric car is a two-door light-weight vehicle that can accommodate up to four passengers. With a single charge, the vehicle can run for more than 120 km at a maximum speed of 120 km/h.
The ministry plans to launch the mass-production of the mini electric car from the second half of 2014 at the earliest.

한번 충전으로 최대 120㎞를 갈 수 있는 1000만원대 미니 국산 전기차가 이르면 2014년 선보일 예정이다.
지식경제부는 17일 인천 송도 포스코 글로벌 R&D 센터에서 `미니 고속 전기차 디자인 모델 품평회`를 열고 2도어 경차 모델을 처음으로 공개했다. 지경부는 미니 전기차 개발을 위해 지난 7월부터 아이티엔지니어링과 에쏘드 등 민간 기업들의 연구개발(R&D)을 지원해왔다.
이번에 공개된 미니 고속전기차는 2도어 2인승을 기본으로 최대 4인까지 탑승 가능한 경차 모델이다. 1회 충전하면 최대 120㎞ 이상 주행할 수 있으며 최고속도는 120㎞/h 이상 낼 수 있도록 제작됐다. 지경부는 이르면 2014년 하반기께 본격적인 양산체제에 들어갈 것으로 보고 있다. 판매 가격은 배터리 가격을 제외하고 1000만원대 수준으로 낮출 방침이다.
