SEOUL, KOREA - Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors announced on December 25 that their four new models received a prestigious design award in the United States.
The four models are Hyundai Motor’s Grandeur, Santa Fe, Veloster Turbo, and Kia Motors’ concept car Trackster. They were given awards in the category of transportation design (automobile) at the 2012 Good Design Award.
The Good Design Award, established in 1950, marked the 62th anniversary this year. The Good Design Award is organized by the Chicago Athenaeum (Museum of Architecture and Design) and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. The Award is given annually to the products with outstanding design among those of Fortune 500 companies ranging from electronics to transportation, furniture, and computer.
As many as 500 products from 48 countries were given this award this year. In the automobile category, a total of nine models received the award, including the four Hyundai, Kia models plus five BMW models.

美서 인정받은 현대·기아車 스타일
현대·기아자동차의 4개 차종이 미국의 전통있는 디자인상을 수상했다. 현대·기아차는 ‘2012 굿디자인 어워드’ 수송 디자인 자동차 부문에서 현대차 그랜저(수출명 아제라·사진), 싼타페, 벨로스터 터보와 기아차의 컨셉트카 트랙스터가 상을 받았다고 25일 발표했다.
1950년 시작돼 올해 62회째를 맞은 ‘굿디자인 어워드’는 미국 시카고 아테네움 건축 디자인 박물관과 유럽 건축·예술·디자인·도시 연구센터가 협력해 선정하는 상이다. 전자, 운송, 가구, 컴퓨터 등 포천 500대 기업의 다양한 제품 중 부문별 수상작을 매년 발표한다.
올해는 전 세계 48개국에서 출품된 총 500여점이 수상작으로 선정됐다. 자동차 분야에서는 현대·기아차 4종과 BMW 5종 등 총 9개 모델이 상을 받았다. BMW의 수상작은 M5, 6시리즈 그란쿠페, 3시리즈 세단, M6 쿠페, 미니 로드스터다. 현대차는 지난해 벨로스터 터보에 이어 2년 연속, 기아차는 2010년 K5와 스포티지R, 지난해 프라이드 5도어와 컨셉트카 KV7에 이어 올해 3년 연속 굿디자인 어워드를 수상했다.
현대·기아차 관계자는 “우수한 제품 디자인 경쟁력을 다시 인정받게 됐다”며 “앞으로도 창의적이고 혁신적인 디자인으로 세계 시장에서 한국 자동차 디자인의 역량을 높이겠다”고 말했다.
