INCHEON, KOREA - The second passenger terminal for Incheon International Airport will be completed by 2017, two years later than originally planned. The Ministry of Land, Transportation, and Maritime Affairs announced on December 27 a revised plan to expand Incheon International Airport.
In 2009, the ministry had unveiled a plan to build a second passenger terminal for the airport by 2015 at the cost of 4 trillion won in efforts to respond to a rise in demand. As the global economy went into a protracted recession, however, the ministry adjusted the plan by reducing the size and postponing the completion date.
According to the revised plan, major transportation facilities such as the railway station, bus terminal, and parking space have been brought near the second passenger terminal while the international business district phase 3 will also located close to the new terminal.
The new airport expansion project will commence in the first half of next year and will be completed in time for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Once the new project is finished, Incheon International Airport will be able to handle more than 62 million passengers from current 44 million a year, with the cargo handling capacity of 5.8 million tons from today's 4.5 million tons.

인천공항 제2여객터미널 2017년 완공
인천국제공항 제2여객터미널이 당초 계획보다 2년 늦춰진 2017년에 완공될 전망이다.
국토해양부는 27일 인천국제공항 3단계 건설 사업 완료시기 2년 연장(2017년), 제2여객터미널 교통시설 체계 개선 등을 주요 내용으로 하는 ‘인천국제공항 3단계 건설 기본계획 변경’을 확정·고시했다.
국토부는 2009년 동북아 주요 공항과 허브화 경쟁 및 지속적인 수요 증가 등에 대응하기 위해 2015년까지 4조원을 들여 제2여객터미널 신설, 항공기 계류장 확충, 연결철도 설치 등을 포함한 3단계 건설기본계획을 수립했다. 하지만 이후 글로벌 경기침체, 유럽 재정위기 등 경기불황 상황이 맞물리면서 사업기간·규모·비용 등을 현실화하는 방향으로 계획을 조정했다는 게 국토부의 설명이다.
변경안에 따르면 글로벌 경제위기, 국내외 항공수요 증가 둔화 등을 감안해 사업완료 및 투자시기를 2015년에서 2017년으로 조정했다. 철도역사와 버스터미널, 주차장 등 교통센터와 공항이용객 및 종사자들의 편의시설인 국제업무지역(IBC-3)도 인근에 배치하기로 했다.
인천국제공항 3단계 건설사업은 내년 상반기부터 공사에 들어갈 예정이다. 이를 통해 2018년 평창 동계올림픽 개최 기간 중 급증할 것으로 예상되는 항공여객 수요에도 대비할 계획이다.
인천국제공항 3단계 건설사업이 마무리되면 인천국제공항은 연간 여객처리능력이 4400만명에서 6200만명으로, 화물처리능력은 450만t에서 580만t으로 각각 늘어난다.
