SEOUL, KOREA - Nearly one out of ten passenger cars on the road in Seoul last year were foreign brands, according to the Ministry of Land, Transportation, and Maritime Affairs and the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association.As of the end of 2012, the number of passenger cars registered in Seoul, excluding vans, trucks, and other commercial vehicles, stood at 1.9 million. Of the total, 179,770 units or 9.4 percent were foreign brands.
The number of passenger cars registered in the whole country stood at 11.06 million. Of the total, 5.5 percent or 603,745 units were foreign imports.
As of the end of 2011, the share of foreign brands in passenger cars stood at 4.7 percent or 503,460 in Korea, and 8.3 percent or 157,956 in Seoul. In just one year, the share of foreign brands rose by 0.8 percentage point in Korea and 1.1 percentage points in Seoul.

서울 승용차 10대 중 1대 수입차…BMW 가장 많아
서울에 등록된 승용차 10대 중 1대는 수입차인 것으로 조사됐다.
22일 국토해양부와 한국수입자동차협회(KAIDA)에 따르면 작년 말 기준으로 승합차, 화물차, 특수차, 다목적차량 등을 제외한 일반 승용차는 서울에 총 190만9306대가 등록돼 있다. 그 가운데 수입차는 17만9770대로 9.4%를 차지한다.
서울에서 일반 승용차 가운데 수입차가 11대 중 1대꼴을 넘어 10대 중 1대꼴에 거의 다다른 셈이다.
전국에 등록된 일반 승용차는 총 1106만5328대, 그중 수입차는 60만3745대로 5.5%에 해당한다. 18대 중 1대꼴로 수입차다.
2011년 말 수입 일반 승용차 등록 대수는 50만3460대로 4.7%의 비율을 보였고 서울은 15만7956대로 8.3%였다. 불과 1년 만에 일반 승용차 중 수입차 비율이 전국에서 0.8%포인트, 서울에서 1.1%포인트 높아졌다.
서울 다음으로 수입 일반 승용차를 도로에서 가장 흔히 찾아볼 수 있는 지역은 부산(8.4%)이며 가장 찾아보기 어려운 곳은 경북(2%)과 울산(2.1%)이다.
KAIDA 회원사 등록 기준으로 가장 많은 브랜드는 BMW와 메르세데스-벤츠다. BMW는 13만여 대, 벤츠는 11만여 대로, 국내에 등록돼 운행 중인 수입차 3대 중 1대꼴로 BMW 또는 벤츠인 것으로 집계됐다.
