SEOUL, KOREA - Low-cost carriers saw their market share on the domestic and international routes rise to 18.8 percent, with the number of international passengers they carried registering a two-fold jump.The Ministry of Land, Transportation, and Maritime Affairs announced on January 22 that the number of passengers who used low-cost carriers last year reached 13.06 million, up 24.1 percent from 10.52 million a year ago.
The market share of budget airliners, accordingly, rose to 18.8 percent last year from 16.5 percent in 2011.
On the international routes, the number of passengers carried by low-cost carriers in 2012 jumped to 3.59 million, up 95.6 percent year-on-year, as the number of routes served rose to 27 in 2012 from 25 in 2011.
On the domestic lanes, they grabbed a share of 43.8 percent in 2012, up slightly from 41.4 percent a year ago.

저가항공사 시장점유율 '쑥쑥'
저가항공사의 국내·국제노선 시장점유율이 18.8%까지 올랐다. 국제노선 수송 인원은 2배 가까이 늘어난 것으로 조사됐다.
국토해양부는 여행 수요 증가와 국제노선 신규 취항 등으로 지난해 국적 저가항공사를 이용한 승객 수가 1306만명으로 늘었다고 22일 발표했다. 이는 2011년(1052만명)보다 24.1% 증가한 것이다. 이에 따라 국적 저가항공사의 국내·국제노선 시장점유율은 2011년 16.5%에서 지난해 18.8%까지 높아졌다.
국제노선의 경우 취항노선 증가(2011년 25개→2012년 27개) 등에 힘입어 지난해 저가항공사의 승객 수는 2011년보다 95.6% 증가한 359만명으로 늘어났다. 저가항공사가 높은 점유율을 보인 노선은 김포-나고야(99.8%), 김해-타이페이(66.9%), 제주-푸동(57.4%), 김해-세부(46.5%) 노선 등의 순이다. 인천-후쿠오카(0.5→22.2%), 제주-푸동(39→57.4%), 김해-방콕(14.2→30.9%) 노선들은 저가항공사의 점유율이 크게 올랐다.
지난해 국내노선에서는 저가항공사가 43.8%의 시장을 차지해 2011년(41.4%)보다 점유율이 소폭 올랐다. 노선별로는 김해-제주(66%), 김포-제주(56%), 군산-제주(51.9%) 등 3개 노선이 50% 이상의 점유율을 보였다.
국토부 관계자는 “외국계 저가항공사의 취항 확대로 경쟁이 심해지고 있지만 해외여행 수요의 지속적 증가와 국내 저가항공사들의 시장 확대 노력으로 성장세는 지속될 것”이라고 내다봤다.
