Seoul, Korea - LG Electronics won the patent lawsuit against Multimedia Patent Trust (MPT), a well-known Patent Troll. Southern District Court of California ruled on the 5th (local time) that LG did not infringe the patent right of MPT. In its final decision, the court confirmed the jurors’ December 2012 verdict as it was.
MPT is a subsidiary of a French telecommunication company, Alcatel Lucent. MPT filed a lawsuit in 2010, claiming that LG infringed two of its video compression technology patents.
The patent troll claimed that 9 of LG’s products, Chocolate Touch VX8575, Bliss UX700, Touch AX8575, Lotus Elite LX610, Mystique UN610, Samba LG8575 and three others, have infringed its patents and demanded USD 9.1 million as royalty, but the jurors sided with LG in their December 2012 verdict.
An LG person related to this matter said he welcomed the court’s decision and emphasized that “LG will keep standing firm against the patent trolls.”

LG전자가 특허괴물 멀티미디어 페이턴트 트러스트(MPT)와 특허 소송에서 승리했다.
미국 캘리포니아 남부지방법원은 5일(현지시각) LG전자가 MPT 특허를 침해하지 않았다고 판결했다. 법원은 최종 판결에서 지난해 12월 나온 배심원 평결 내용을 그대로 확정했다.
MPT는 프랑스 통신회사 알카텔 루슨트의 자회사다. 지난 2010년 LG전자가 자사의 동영상 압축 관련 특허 두 건을 침해했다며 소송을 냈다.
대상 제품은 초콜릿 터치 VX8575·블리스 UX700·터치 AX8575·로터스 엘리트 LX610·미스틱 UN610·삼바 LG8575 등 9종이다.
MPT는 LG전자가 특허침해 배상금으로 910만달러를 지급해야 한다고 주장했으나 배심원단은 지난해 12월 평결에서 이 주장을 인정하지 않고 LG전자의 손을 들어줬다.
LG전자 관계자는 “법원 결정을 환영한다”며 “특허괴물에 대해 앞으로도 강경하게 대응할 것”이라고 강조했다.
