SEOUL, KOREA - Following HTC, Motorola Mobility and others, BlackBerry is going to close down its business in Korea.
The local mobile phone industry said 14th that BlackBerry Korea would be shut down as of the end of this month.
After the withdrawal of BlackBerry, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Pantech and Apple will share the Korean mobile phone market. And some of the China-based mobile phone makers including ZTE are trying to advance into the Korean market, but their market share is insignificant.
BlackBerry has decided to withdraw from Korea based on its global corporation reshuffling plan, following HTC and Motorola. Its complete withdrawal will be the end of this month. Motorola is also planning to go out of business in Korea around the end of this month.
‘BlackBerry 10’ and other new products released to the US market last month won’t be seen in the Korean market due to the withdrawal. It is known that the withdrawal of BlackBerry Korea is decided by the headquarters as they plan to restructure unprofitable global corporations.

HTC, 모토로라모빌리티 등에 이어 블랙베리도 한국 사업을 접는다.
14일 휴대폰 유통 업계에 따르면 블랙베리 한국법인이 이달 말로 사업을 정리하고 철수한다.
블랙베리 철수로 국내 시장은 삼성전자·LG전자·팬택·애플만 남게 됐다. ZTE 등 중국 제조사가 노크하고 있지만 점유율은 미미하다.
블랙베리 역시 HTC, 모토로라 등과 같이 글로벌 법인 조정에 따라 한국 시장 철수가 결정됐다. 완전 철수 시점은 이달 말이다. 모토로라도 이달 말을 기한으로 사업을 정리 중이다.
블랙베리코리아 철수로 지난 달 미국에서 출시한 `블랙베리10` 등 신제품 한국 출시는 사실상 물 건너갔다. 한국지사 철수는 블랙베리10 출시 후 BIS(Blackberry Internet Service)가 정착된 선진 시장을 집중 공략하고 수익성이 낮은 지역을 구조 조정하려는 본사 경영 방침 때문인 것으로 알려졌다.
블랙베리는 2008년 SK텔레콤과 `블랙베리 9000 볼드`를 내놓으며 최강 비즈니스 스마트폰으로 유명세를 탔다. 아이폰과 안드로이드폰이 시장을 장악하면서 심각한 경영난에 빠져 지난해에는 신제품조차 내놓지 못했다. 올해 풀 터치 스마트폰 `블랙베리 Z10`을 내놨지만 수익성이 낮은 일본, 한국 등 일부 법인은 정리하며 비용을 줄이는 상황이다.
블랙베리 국내 시장 점유율은 1% 수준이다. 한국 현지화와 서비스 대비 수익이 나지 않는다. 제조사가 휴대폰 판매를 위해 보조금을 주는 국내 통신 시장 관행도 블랙베리 발목을 잡았다는 분석이다. 쿼티 자판과 BIS로 비즈니스맨에게 인기가 높았지만 안드로이드와 애플이 확장한 앱 생태계에 제대로 적응하지 못한 것도 원인이다.
블랙베리를 단독 출시해온 SK텔레콤 관계자는 “블랙베리 한국법인 철수에 아는 바 없다”고 말했다. 최근 미국에서 공개된 블랙베리10 출시에 대해선 “지난해와 마찬가지로 외산폰을 유통하는데 시장이 좋지 않다”며 사실상 출시가 어려운 상황임을 전했다.
