SEOUL, KOREA – At the MWC 2013 in Barcelona, SK Telecom will demonstrate carrier aggregation (CA), one of the key LTE-A technologies, for the first time in the world. By doing so, Korea will take the lead in utilizing the next-generation technology, LTE-A. The commercialization of LTE-A will allow users to download a 1.4GB high-resolution movie just in 75 seconds and enjoy full HD and 3D video services in a wireless manner.
Carrier aggregation (CA) enables operators to combine frequency bands in order to enhance the speed of data transmission. SK Telecom mentioned, “Demonstrating 150Mbps LTE via a smartphone is testimony to SK Telecom’s undisputed global leadership in CA technology.
Though foreign operators like Russia’s Yota and some Chinese operators are working on the evolution of CA-based networks, no one has ever attempted to demonstrate CA via a smartphone. At the MWC 2013, some equipment makers will show off CA technology in the form of modems.
In addition, SK Telecom will showcase “super cells” (designed to address handover problems), LTE femto cells (which allow service providers to extend service coverage indoors or underground, especially where access would otherwise be limited or unavailable) and Tetra-cells.
