SEOUL, KOREA - GS Caltex is going to run its 4th Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU). The local oil refinery has put KRW 5 trillion since 2004 to become a leading local oil company with the greatest capacity of degrading heavy oil.
According to the refinery sector on March 12th, the local oil company had completed the construction of its 4th FCCU (refinery upgrading facilities), into which the company put about KRW 1.3 trillion since May of 2011, and is going to give it a test run from March 13th for about a month before the actual operation for a commercial purpose.
The facilities include a Vacuum Gas Oil Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (VGO FCC), a gasoline Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) unit with the capacity of producing 24,000 barrels per day and an Alkylation process unit which is an eco-friendly facility for producing premium gasoline. By degrading Bunker C oil and other heavy oil, they can produce 53,000 barrels of high value oil products such as gasoline and diesel on a daily basis.
The refinery upgrading facilities will account for 34.6% of the total refined petroleum, placing the oil company at the top among other rivals.
GS칼텍스, 4번째 고도화설비 운영
GS칼텍스가 4번째 고도화설비를 운영한다. GS칼텍스는 지난 2004년부터 시작된 5조원 투자를 마무리하고 국내 1위의 고도화 역량을 갖춘 회사로 올라선다.
12일 정유업계에 따르면 GS칼텍스가 지난 2011년 5월부터 전남 여수공장에 약 1조3000억원을 투자해 구축한 제4 중질유분해시설(고도화설비)의 준공을 마치고 13일부터 시험가동에 돌입한다. GS칼텍스는 약 30일가량의 시험가동을 거쳐 내달부터 상업생산에 들어간다는 계획이다.
제4 고도화설비는 감압 경유 유동상촉매시설(VGO FCC)과 하루 2만4000배럴 규모의 휘발유 탈황시설, 친환경 고급휘발유 제조시설인 알킬레이션 생산공정으로 구성된다. 원유보다 싼 벙커C유 등 중질유를 분해해 하루 총 5만3000배럴의 휘발유·경유와 같은 고부가가치 석유제품을 만든다.
GS칼텍스는 고도화설비 완공으로 고도화 비율이 원유 정제능력 기준 34.6%로 국내 정유 4사 가운데 선두로 올라선다. 하루 처리용량도 27만배럴에 달한다.
제4 고도화설비는 공정에너지 효율향상으로 이산화탄소 배출량을 줄일 수 있다. 다량의 황을 포함한 중질유의 대부분을 저유황 경질유로 전환해 대기중으로 배출되는 황화합물을 연간 7만톤정도 저감할 수 있다.
GS칼텍스는 제4 고도화설비를 통해 수출시장 확대와 다변화에 더욱 주력할 방침이다. 고도화율을 바탕으로 지난해 업계 최초 250억달러 수출의 탑 수상 실적을 올해도 이어나가겠다는 각오다.
GS칼텍스 관계자는 “고도화설비 등 과감한 선제적 투자와 사업다각화, 수출선 다변화 등 발상 전환을 통해 정유업계의 수출을 계속 선도하겠다”고 말했다.
