SEOUL, KOREA – The Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) decided to expand investment in science, technology and ICT at the 2013 FKI leaders’ meeting, held in Seoul on Thursday.
In a statement issued right after the meeting, the FKI leaders said, “The ultimate goal of a “creative economy,” envisioned by President Park Geun-hye, is to provide Koreans with more jobs by creating new industries and markets. Since the role of economic circles is of importance, Korean companies have decided to raise investment in science, technology and ICT in order to add new cutting-edge, high valued added industries to the Korean economy. Also, we will spur on industry-to-industry collaboration to foster convergence industries and will double our efforts to create new industries.”
In addition, a special committee for a creative economy, comprised of CEOs of Korean conglomerates and an army of industry, technology and economic experts, will be put up next month to scout for new business opportunities in cooperation with the new Korean government.
A high-ranking official from the FKI said, “The private sector has to discover new industries by leveraging science and technology and promoting industry-to-industry exchanges. We will brainstorm a list of new business projects and infrastructure construction tasks, which can be implemented within this year, and present the list to the Korean government.

재계 창조경제 실현 위해 과학기술•ICT 투자 확대한다…창조특위도 설치
전국경제인연합회는 14일 서울 소공동 롯데호텔에서 새 정부 첫 회장단회의를 개최, 이 같이 결정했다.
회장단은 회의 직후 발표문에서 “창조경제의 궁극적 목표는 새로운 산업과 시장을 창조해 국민에게 더 좋은 일자리를 더 많이 제공하는 것”이라며 “경제계의 적극적 역할이 중요한 만큼 기업은 경제를 첨단 고부가가치 산업으로 발전시키고자 창조경제의 원동력이 되는 과학기술과 ICT 산업 투자를 확대하기로 했다”고 밝혔다. 산업 간 협력으로 융•복합 산업을 발전시키고 새로운 산업 발굴 노력도 강화하기로 했다.
새로운 먹거리를 정부와 함께 찾기 위해 창조경제특별위원회도 구성한다.
박찬호 전경련 전무는 “창조경제를 위해 민간에서는 과학기술이나 이업종 교류로 신산업을 발굴해야 한다”며 “올해 안에 실천할 수 있는 사업 프로젝트나 인프라 구축 과제를 도출해 정부에 제시하겠다”고 말했다. 신사업을 위한 규제 해결 과제도 제시한다. 위원회는 내달 발족한다. 대기업 CEO와 산업•기술•경제 전문가가 대거 참여한다.
저성장 장기화에 우려도 표했다. 주요국이 경제 활성화 정책을 추진하고 있어 우리나라도 침체 경제를 회복시킬 대책이 필요하다는 의견을 제시했다.
회의에서는 전경련 발전위원회 운영 계획도 세웠다. 내달 출범하며 전경련 사업 운영과 조직혁신 방안을 제시한다.
이날 회의에는 허창수 전경련 회장을 비롯해 이준용 대림 회장, 현재현 동양 회장, 강덕수 STX 회장 등 9명이 참석했다.
