SEOUL, KOREA – The BMW Group and the international automotive supplier Continental signed a deal to jointly develop an electronic co-pilot system capable of supporting highly automated driving. The main goal of the research partnership is to have highly automated driving functions ready for implementation until 2020 and thereafter. An era of unmanned cars indeed draws near.
Yet, South Korea lags behind when it comes to the development of key technologies for unmanned, autonomous cars. It was found that Korea’s technologies in this field are over five years behind advanced nations like the US and the EU. There is a lack of technologies for key parts like radars, laser sensors and image sensors.
Against this backdrop, the government will take the lead in developing an unmanned car platform that can sense surroundings and control vehicles by resorting to various sensors.
Unmanned, self-driving cars are regarded as one of the key platforms for the future, human-centered auto industry, along with smart cars and connected cars. As self-driving cars have emerged as a new item capable of creating a new market through cooperation and convergence between the auto and IT industries, governments around the world are proactively supporting tie-ups between makers of finished cars and providers of services and parts.

'무인 자율주행 자동차' 국산 기술 확보해라~
최근 BMW와 콘티넨털은 고속도로에서 완전 자율주행을 할 자동차 개발에 협력하기로 했다. 독일의 대표 완성차와 부품 업체가 내년까지 무인 자율주행 시험용 차량을 개발할 계획이다. 특히 2020년을 전후해 단계적으로 상용화한다는 목표다. 운전자 조작 없이 자동차가 스스로 주변 도로 상황을 인식하고, 목적지를 찾아가는 무인 자동차 시대가 성큼 다가왔다.
우리나라만 `무인 자율주행` 원천 기술 개발이 부진하다. 우리나라 관련 기술 경쟁력은 미국, 유럽 등 선진국에 비해 5년 이상 뒤처진 것으로 분석됐다. 레이더 및 레이저 센서, 영상 센서 등 핵심 부품 기술 내재화가 부족하기 때문이다.
이 같은 상황을 타개하기 위해 정부 주도 아래 다양한 센서를 기반으로 주행 환경을 인식하고 차량을 제어할 무인 자동차 플랫폼을 개발한다. 무인 자율주행 관련 부품 경쟁력을 높이고 전문 인력을 확보할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
업계 관계자는 “우리나라는 1998년 세계에서 네 번째로 무인 군집주행을 시연하고 민간 차원의 자율주행 경진대회를 꾸준히 열었지만, 정부와 업계가 힘을 합친 미국•유럽 등과의 기술 격차는 더욱 확대됐다”며 “원천 기술 내재화가 지지부진하고 자동차와 IT 산업 간 융합 시도와 전문인력이 부족한 것이 원인”이라고 진단했다.
무인 자율주행 자동차는 스마트카와 커넥티드카의 뒤를 이어 사람이 중심인 미래 자동차 산업의 핵심 플랫폼이다. 자동차와 IT 산업 간 협력과 융합 시도를 통해 새 시장을 창출할 핵심 아이템으로 떠올랐다. 각국 정부가 완성차와 부품 및 서비스 업체들 간의 협력을 적극 지원하는 것도 이 같은 배경이다.
지식경제부가 지난해 7월부터 무인 자율주행 자동차 기술 개발 촉진 사업에 나선 것도 같은 맥락이다. 지식경제부는 사업의 마지막 과제로 오는 10월 11일 전남 영암 F1 경기장에서 `2013 무인 자율주행 자동차 경진대회`를 개최한다. 자동차부품연구원과 자동차공학회가 주관하며 전자신문이 후원한다. 국내 무인 자동차 대회는 처음이다. 지난해 서류 심사를 통해 서울대 차세대융합기술대학원 등 10개 팀이 본선에 진출했다. 지경부 관계자는 “대회 결과에 따라 정기 개최 방안을 검토 중”이라며 “자동차와 이종 산업 간 융합을 촉진할 것”으로 기대했다.
